What is High-Speed Internet access?
High-speed Internet utilizes existing coaxial cable and fiber optic lines that
currently bring cable television into your home. One important difference
between analog (dial-up) modem technology and that of High-Speed Internet
is bandwidth capacity, thus delivering greatly enhanced speed to its users.
What type of connection speeds can I expect?
High-speed
Internet gets up to 4Mb down and up to 384Kb up. The speeds can be increased for an additional monthly fee. Other
high-speed packages include our Lite High-Speed
Internet and our Launcher High-Speed
Internet services.
How does High-Speed Internet access compare to 56K modems?
56K dial-up modems upload at 28.8Kb and download at an average of 53Kb, so their
speeds fall dramatically short of our High-Speed Internet service which can
upload at speeds of 384Kb or higher and download at speeds of 4Mb or higher.![]()
How does High-speed Internet compare to ISDN Internet access?
ISDN is limited to a maximum connection rate of 128K, delivering approximately
5 times the performance of a dial-up modem. Our High-Speed Internet service can
upload at speeds of 384Kb or higher and download at speeds of 4Mb or higher.
Can I buy my Cable Modem?
Knology requires high-speed Internet customers to purchase
their cable modem. The cost of the cable modem is $49.95. However, if the
customer will sign a two year contract for high-speed Internet service, we
will give them the cable modem.
Will this affect the cable line connected to my television?
Your television will not be affected with the installation of high-speed Internet.
Both your television and your computer can operate simultaneously. The cable
television signals and the Internet information both share the same cable,
running at different frequencies. This will not adversely affect the quality
of either the television transmission or the functionality of your computer.![]()
Can I use High-Speed Internet access with my television?
No. High-Speed Internet access is designed to be used only with your computer,
which will need to be at the location of the install on or before the install
date. Your computer must also be equipped with an Ethernet card, which is
included during the installation process.
Is High-Speed Internet access the same thing as 'WebTV'?
No. The WebTV product relies on the use of an analog modem to connect you to
the Internet while your television acts as a large monitor for viewing the
text and graphics. Most existing television screens will not provide the
resolution clarity of a computer monitor. WebTV is primarily designed for
those who do not own a computer.

How many PCs can use one cable modem?
Only one PC can be attached to a cable modem to access the Internet for a basic
install. For an additional price, multiple PCs can be allowed to use one
cable modem for Internet access with the use of network equipment.

You can email Technical Support at support@graceba.net or call toll-free
1-888-609-9299.
What is a cable modem?
A cable modem is a small box that connects your computer to the Internet via
your local cable television provider. A cable modem has two connections,
one that leads to the cable lines outside your home and an Ethernet connection
to your computer.![]()
What are the advantages of using a cable modem to access the Internet?
A cable modem will provide you with rapid download transmission speeds. Downloading
a file that would take one-half hour using a telephone modem connection will
take only a few minutes with a cable modem connection.
A cable modem provides a continual connection to the Internet. Two-way cable
modems do not require the use of a telephone line.
Your service will not be interrupted or receive external static since the outer
layer of the cable line will not allow any noise to enter the transmission
line.
As a high-speed medium, you will be able to view many different multimedia
presentations - 'live' or streamed - such as concerts, movies, etc.
Can I watch television and browse the Internet at the same time?
Yes, you can. Since television and the cable modem operate on separate frequencies
of the available cable bandwidth, you will be able to watch television and
browse the Internet at the same time.
Is a telephone line still required when using a cable modem to access the
Internet?
You will not need a telephone line when using a two-way cable modem. The cable
line carries both upstream and downstream signals.![]()
If I become a subscriber, will I still need an Internet
Service Provider?
Your service includes an Internet Service Provider as part of the cable modem
service package. Your service package also includes an e-mail account(s), news,
World Wide Web access and web space.
Will my browse time be monitored or restricted?
No, your browse time will not be monitored or restricted.
A network interface card is already installed on my computer. Can it be
used for this service?
Yes, if the network interface card is not already being used for other purpose,
such as supporting a home network. If your network interface card is already
being used, we will provide you with another network interface card when we
install your cable modem for a minimal fee.![]()
Should I backup my files before the cable modem is installed?
Yes, you should copy and store all of the information on your hard disk in
a different location before the cable modem is installed. We cannot guarantee
the integrity of the data on your hard disk during the cable modem installation
process.
What can I do to increase security and prevent hackers from accessing information
on my computer?
The possibility of your computer being 'hacked' is slim to none. Although
illegal entry into computer systems happens every day, it generally occurs
in large corporations. Hackers commonly 'sweep' a range of IP addresses looking
for possible 'holes' to exploit. These 'holes' are generally provided by
oversights in software development, such as telnet servers, mail servers, FTP
servers, chat servers, etc. Most of our customers have no need to run these
types of services, and are therefore not vulnerable to such exploits.
However, for your added security, we recommend you disable 'File and Print
Sharing' on your TCP/IP connection. If sharing on your home network is necessary,
we recommend File & Print sharing be enabled on another protocol that is
not accessible via the Internet, such as NetBEUI. If File & Print Sharing
from the Internet is needed, we recommend you password protect your shared
resources. Other hardware and/or software solutions exist to protect your computer
and home network from possible Internet attack. It is at your discretion to
use such devices, but they are not supported by our Customer Service or Technical
Support Departments.
Do you support home networking?
Yes, our High-Speed Internet service supports home networking. There is an additional monthly fee per computer and networking equipment is required.![]()
Can I fax through a cable modem?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to fax through a cable modem because a fax
requires an analog fax/modem to operate. However, with the correct software,
much of which is freely available, it is possible to send and receive faxes
through an Internet connection without the need of an analog phone line and
fax/modem device.
Does Internet filtering software (i.e. NetNanny) work when using a cable
modem?
Filtering software that is running locally on your own system will filter out
undesired content. For additional information about this type of product, contact
the vendor.
What factors affect my Internet speed?
There are many factors affecting the exact upload and download speeds you will
experience at any given time on the Internet. These factors include the amount
of general Internet traffic, the performance limitations of your computer,
the popularity of the site you're visiting, the density of graphic images
on the page you wish to view, Internet virus activity, etc. These and many
other technical factors are constantly fluctuating, so you may see wide variations
in speed even when visiting the same Internet location.![]()
Does cable modem connect to my television?
No. Knology provides a high-speed data connection to the computer. All of this
is done through the cable lines that already run into the home.
What is the installation procedure for Knology High-Speed Internet?
When you choose to have Knology high-speed Internet installed in your home,
an appointment will be made to have an installer come by to place a second
cable jack in the room where your personal computer is located. There is
an installation fee for this service as well as a fee to install the jack.
This cable line connects to a cable modem, a small piece of hardware that
will sit near your computer.
In order to connect the cable modem to your personal computer, your computer
must have a 10BaseT Ethernet connector. Our installation price covers the cost
of the card.
A trained computer technician will also be dispatched to your home to install
the Ethernet card, if necessary, as well as the software needed to access the
Internet. To safeguard against possible data loss during installation, we recommend
that you back up your hard disk before beginning the installation. We also
recommend you have your original setup disk available during installation.
Who owns the Ethernet card and will I need a PCI or ISA card?
When we install an Ethernet card in your computer as part of the installation
of high-speed Internet service in your home, then the card is yours to keep.![]()
